Why website speed is quietly costing you customers
Nobody emails you to say “your site was slow, so I bought from your competitor.” They just leave. Speed is the most invisible leak in your funnel — and usually the cheapest one to fix.
What slowness actually costs
The industry data has said the same thing for a decade: as load time goes from 1s to 3s, bounce probability jumps sharply; past 5s, most mobile visitors are gone. If your site converts 2% and speed fixes lift that to 2.5%, that’s a 25% revenue increase — from the same traffic you’re already paying for.
Google measures it too — Core Web Vitals
- LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) — how fast the main content appears. Target: under 2.5s.
- INP (Interaction to Next Paint) — how fast the page reacts to taps and clicks. Target: under 200ms.
- CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) — does the page jump around while loading? Target: under 0.1.
These are ranking signals. A slow site doesn’t just convert worse — it ranks worse, so it also gets less traffic to convert. Double penalty.
The usual suspects (fix these first)
- Unoptimized images — the #1 offender everywhere. Serve modern formats (WebP/AVIF), size them properly, lazy-load below the fold.
- Too many plugins/scripts — every chat widget, popup tool and tracker you added “just to try” loads on every visit. Audit ruthlessly.
- Render-blocking third parties — load analytics and chat after the page, not before it.
- Cheap hosting — a slow server caps everything else. Sometimes the fix is just better hosting + caching/CDN.
- Page-builder bloat — builders are fine when built carefully; stacked addons and nested sections are not. (More in our Elementor vs custom theme piece.)
How to check your site right now
Run your homepage through PageSpeed Insights (free). Look at the mobile score — that’s where your customers are. Under 60? You’re losing money daily. Also test your most-visited page, not just the homepage — ad landing pages are often the slowest of all.
Fast is a feature. Users can’t name it, but they feel it — and they buy more from sites that feel instant.
Our rule for every build
Every site we ship — custom, WordPress or Shopify — leaves with green Core Web Vitals on mobile. Not as an add-on; it’s just the standard. If your current site fails the test, a speed rescue is usually days of work, not weeks.
Is your site slow? Send us the URL — we’ll audit it free and tell you exactly what’s costing you conversions.
